I wanted to go to Cuba, but it proved to be more difficult than I thought. If Elian Gonzalez swam here, why couldn’t I fly there? Well, not only do i suck at packing, I was denied access to the country. I’m left with two alternatives.
Carmen’s reopened Friday night and I nearly died of pure satisfaction. I lived almost my entire life without Cuban food, which is pretty sad, when you really think about it. Thankfully, I met Jen about 5 years ago and instantly realized that she (was really hot…and) cooked in a completely different way than I did. Superrrrrrrr generous with the deliciousness, and it’s obviously working for her…..PLUS, she will die happy (…and still hot.)
So in my short experience, Cuban food basically does NOT skimp on anything, but the main ingredients are usually things I feel really good about eating, and make me feel good. I almost always order the Cuban Eggs- 2 eggs cooked to order (scrambled with cheese, please), black beans, rice, plantains, avocado, and fresh cilantro. SO good. And such a good power meal to fuel weekend adventures. My friends LOVE the Chorizo Hash. And even an enemy would love the sangria.
OH, AND THEY TAKE CREDIT CARDS NOW!!!!!!!
Carmen’s is clearly good…but what I think is even more special than their eggs is the amazingly unique and welcoming atmosphere and staff. It’s got this cozy old world feel, is sunny, yellow, happy, yelllloooow, and basically just makes you feel happy and like everything in your life is right and great. And full. Maybe it’s the yellow. Or maybe it’s the mimosas (ALSO YELLOW.) But I’m betting that it’s the perfect combination that is the result of some sort of supernova or Cuban shooting star….not to be confused with a missile. Too soon??? Jen?? Elian???
Go to Carmen’s. It will make you feel like daaaaaancin’.
